Merel Eyckerman

Merel Eyckerman (b.1981) has an MA in illustration design from PHL/Hasselt. She spent one semester in Lahti Polytechnic/Finland on an exchange program. Later in her studies her interest in archaeology was fuelled when she could join a team from the University of Cologne involved in excavations in the Dakhla Oasis/Egypt.

Since 2003 she has illustrated picture books, primary readers and magazines. Apart from Belgium and The Netherlands her work is published in Canada, Hungary, France, South-Korea, Russia, Sweden and the United States.

After her experiences in Dakhla and Sagalassos/Turkey she did one year of part-time practice as an illustrator in a project in the Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels.

From 2006 she has combined her freelance work with the research project “Non-fiction graphic illustration exemplified by excavations in Egypt” in which she collaborated and published with the archaeologist Dr. Stan Hendrickx.

She participates annually in excavation projects in Egypt, mostly with the KUL (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) in Deir El Bersha.
