Tom Lambeens // Code and Sensation in Comics

Tom Lambeens: Front/Back, 2009

With his doctoral research on Code and sensation in comics, Lambeens tries
to determine – starting from plastic premises – the distinctive features of
the comic strip as a medium. He does so, not only by focusing on the differences with
other media, but also by searching for codes from other media that can be
used in comics. He also examines the interaction between repetition and
differences, code and sensation that is activated when static pictures are placed
in juxtaposition. Special attention goes to the (de)coding of images, the
sensational qualities of (linguistic) archetypes and the line of flight that
evokes sensation as it escapes from Platonic codes to evoke sensation.
