About

Research Group Image&Word

The research group Image&Word based at the Media & Design Academy department of KHLim and the Arts & Architecture department at PHL is subdivided into three indissolubly interwoven domains:

1) Image as Text

2) Text as Image

3) Image +Text

Image&Word seeks to provide a multidisciplinary framework for research projects in the arts that explore medially hybrid areas situated between that which is traditionally viewed as either textual or visual. It is the extinction of exactly this either-or opposition i.e. the deconstruction of the tradition-steeped dichotomy between visual and textual that is the common feature of the research projects under the Image&Word umbrella.

The research conducted by the members of the Image&Word research team is research in both art and design. A significant aspect of Image&Word’s research activities is their strong relation to the curriculum offered at MAD-Faculty. Researchers’ expertise does not only produce scientific (&) artistic output, but is also implemented in courses and studios at the two campuses. The domain of Image&Word is thus represented on all faculty levels (bachelor, master, MAD-Research), which is i.a. illustrated by the number of courses, studios and projects taught and led by members of the team.
