Call for papers: 4th Screenwriting Conference 2011, Brussels
The MAD-faculty (KHLim and PHL) is one of the organizers of the 4th Screenwriting Research Network Conference on 8, 9 and 10 September 2011, in Brussels. “Beyond Boundaries: Screenwriting Across Media” is the topic of this fourth conference.
We would like to invite submissions on (but not limited to) these topics:
- Screenwriting history research (and archiving)
- Theorizing screenwriting and the screenplay
- Rethinking screenwriting in intercultural perspective
- New approaches to developing the screen idea
- Non-linguistic screenplays (video-art, comics, etc.)
- Writing for television: tv-series nowadays seem to be the avant-garde of narrative experimentation
- Transmedial scriptwriting: coping with medium-specific features
- Screenwriting for animation; how it differs from traditional screenwriting
- Pedagogics of screenwriting: can it be taught? And how? Also: practice as research and how to teach screenwriting theory and practice within an academic or practice based contex
- How theory and practice of screenwriting can collaborate for better screenwriting: panel (meeting/discussion) between theoreticians and practitioners

Call for abstracts: masterclasses for PhD students
From 1 January to 30 June 2011, professor Jostein Gripsrud of the University of Bergen (Norway), will reside as International Francqui Professor in Belgium. Within the context of his Francqui professorship, communication and media studies departments from the VUB, UGent and ULB organise a series of masterclasses for PhD students in the field of communication and media studies, for which a call for abstracts is now opened.
The masterclasses are organizes around four topics:
- Changing structures of the public sphere
- Media policy challenges in a context of convergence and multilevel governance
- Screen cultures in digital times (narrative cinema, television, games, blogs, etc.)
- The politics of popular culture

Seminar Boeiende Verhalen & Scenario’s
De Vlaamse Script Academie organiseert vanaf 5 februari 2011 een lessenreeks “Boeiende verhalen en scenario’s schrijven”. Deze opleiding is geschikt voor schrijvers, regisseurs, scenaristen en iedereen die zelf verhalen wil analyseren én schrijven. De klemtoon ligt op visueel en dramatisch vertellen. Het seminar is opgedeeld in twee delen.
In het gedeelte “terminologie” leer je een specifiek vakjargon gebruiken waarmee je op een meer objectieve manier over verhalen en vertellen kan communiceren. Daarna volgen concrete schrijfoefeningen.
In het gedeelte “methodologie” leer je verschillende werkwijzen kennen om (langere) verhalen op een efficiënte manier te construeren en uit te schrijven, alsook om die verhalen op hun dramatisch potentieel te analyseren en te evalueren.

Aambacht
On Saturday, November 13, amidst torrents of rain water gushing down the hilly streets of the Brussels upper town I&W researcher Tom Lambeens and his accomplices Sebastien Conard and Jan Op De Beeck launched their new journal entitled Aambacht. The occasion was the finissage of the exhibition ‘Toegepast: Fit to boost’ organised by Desig Platform Limburg in the gallery of Design Vlaanderen. The production by IMPRIMITIV, Lambeens’, Conard’s and Op De Beeck’s collective non-profit organisation, was – to say the least – an outsider in a gallery filled with design objects. It cannot be denied though, that this is what Aambacht aspires to be: an outsider journal targeted at a niche reader- and – important to stress in this case – spectatorship
Strip en illustratie in België. Een stand van zaken en de sociaaleconomische situatie van de sector
Op vrijdag 19 november werd de tweetalige publicatie Strip en illustratie in België. Een stand van zaken en de sociaaleconomische situatie van de sector op een studiedag van SMartBe voorgesteld. In opdracht van deze professionele vereniging voor creatieve beroepen deden Pascal Lefèvre en Morgan di Salvia een uitgebreid onderzoek naar de sector van de strip en de illustratie in België.
De publicatie biedt in een eerste luik een radiografie van de sector: vereniginging, opleidingen, subsidieregelingen, uitgevers, distributie en verkoop, randsectoren (musea, festivals…). Het tweede hoofdstuk bundelt de resultaten van een online enquête bij 191 Franstalige en 72 Nederlandstalige stripauteurs en illustratoren. Een derde hoofdstuk gaat in de digitale ontwikkelingen (zoals het succes van de manga voor draagbare telefoons in Japan). Tenslotte worden de belangrijkste pijn- en discussiepunten nog samengevat en enkele mogelijke oplossingen naar voren gebracht.
